Common Myths About Sex Therapy

"My sex therapist will engage in some form of sexual activity with me."

False! Sex therapists are just like any other therapist: if they form a romantic or sexual relationship with you, they stand to lose their license. Sex Therapy is talk therapy that does not shy away from sexual issues. It does not involve touch with the therapist or nudity of any kind. You won't be pressured into providing details that don't feel safe or helpful and you will be protected emotionally and physically.

Often conflated with sex therapy is something called "Surrogate Partner Therapy" wherein the sex therapist will team up with a sex worker who can provide physical touch during and outside of session. This is most often used with clients that have severe physical disabilities or panic symptoms related to sexual or romantic situations. Bluet Counseling does NOT provide surrogate partner therapy.

"Sex therapy can only be about sex - outside of that, I'll need to find another therapist."

False! I am a therapist first and a sex therapist second. This means that I possess all of the requisite skills of any other generalist therapist. Anxiety, depression and trauma are all issues that I am skilled and experienced in working with and it is rare that sexual topics don't overlap with them in some way.

If I find myself in an area of treatment that I am not well suited for (such as substance abuse treatment), I will be the first to tell you and refer you to other resources.

"Sex therapy is too scary for me!"

I cannot tell you how many folks have come to their first sessions with me feeling nervous or downright terrified. They just don't know what to expect! Rest assured, that I will take the time to get to know you and ease into whatever it is that brings you to counseling.

By the end of the first session, my clients breathe a big sigh of relief. I'm not here to back you into a corner or pass judgment or perpetuate shame - quite the opposite: I'm here to create a safe environment and empower you to realize your best sexual self.
